Position Summary As the organizational expert in the field, performs highly
complex work related to researching, developing and applying fundamental
mathematics, mathematical or statistical theory to collect, organize,
interpret and summarize numerical data to provide usable information, solve or
direct solutions to a wide range of problems. Works directly with senior
technical personnel, program/project managers and external organizations in
the planning, oversight, execution and evaluation of multiple complex and
advanced technical activities for system and technical product development.
Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of scientific principles and
practices in broad areas across one or more technical disciplines. Maintains
a liaison role for technical matters with staff and customers, and acts
independently on technical issues within his/her field of expertise. Advises
program managers on challenging technical issues, coordinates the use of
senior technical resources across the organization on multi-disciplinary
problems, and provides technical guidance and leadership to less-experienced
mathematicians and other technical staff. Works within a peer group of senior
technical staff to periodically review technical plans, results, and work
products. Recognized within Alion and the technical community as an authority
in one or more technical specialties. Typically publishes professional and
scientific papers and patents. Duties and Responsibilities Provides technical
advisory and consulting expertise to programs and projects under development,
acting as a recognized authority in the appropriate field. Provides subject
matter expertise, guidance and work leadership to technical staff and other
internal groups. Serves as a technical specialist for the organization in the
application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes. Serves
as program technical team lead. Prioritizes technical issues, plans technical
approach, and works with program managers to develop schedules and staffing
plans to support program delivery milestones. Conducts independent technical
investigations and provides impact assessments and design recommendations to
clients. Provides assurance that technical projects are performed in a
technically proficient manner and ensures conclusions and recommendations are
supported by the analyses presented. Applies complex and advanced mathematical
theories and statistical methods to support one or more programs in the
development of solutions to practical problems. Exercises independent judgment
in conducting complex analyses and development efforts, and provides technical
direction to other staff in interpreting statistical data in order to identify
significant differences in relationships among sources of information.
Performs advanced computations, applies methods of numerical analysis and
sampling techniques or utilizes complete enumeration bases to data. Develops
and provides final technical review of major technical reports, status
reports, letters, technical memoranda, contract reports and formal briefings.
Assembles sets of assumptions, explores the consequences of each set and
addresses the relationships of quantities, magnitudes, and forms through the
use of numbers and symbols. Provides technical advisory and consulting
expertise for complex research projects that apply valid scientific techniques
and utilize information obtained from baselines or historical data in order to
structure analyses to determine limitations in terms of reliability or
usability and any factors that could affect the results. Develops, tests and
reviews experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods.
Contributes original ideas and innovations to both solicited and unsolicited
proposals that result in the expansion of ongoing programs or new program
starts. Develops related briefings and provides understandable and compelling
presentations of technical ideas/proposals. Provides guidance to less
experienced Mathematicians. Education and Experience Master's degree in
Mathematics, Statistics or in area of specialty plus 10 to 12 years relevant
work experience. Doctorate degree preferred. In some cases, educational
requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 20 years applicable work
experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge
or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or
labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data. Knowledge, Skills
and Experience Advanced analytical skills and attention to detail. Excellent
communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. Proficient in Microsoft
Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. JITC & ATEC experience preferred.
Applicant must hold at least a secret clearance and be eligible to obtain a TS
clearance after employment.
