OPERATIONS SPECIALIST, PRINCIPAL with a specialty in Non-Destructive Evaluation and Radiation-Based Imaging

SUMMARY: The Principal Operations Specialist analyzes systems, subsystems, and components of systems and subsystems to identify and recommend improvements that increase production output.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following, as well as other assigned duties:

  • serves as an expert in a narrow aspect of a particular field of engineering, plant operations, or operations support

  • plans and completes broad and complex projects or studies

  • coordinates test setups and experiments to prove feasibility of preliminary designs

  • prepares designs and specifications for complex components or systems

  • constructs operational prototypes to test design changes of methods of operation

  • plans approach to solve design problems, recommends new design techniques, resolves design problems with client and assures compatibility of design with existing systems

  • utilizes creativity and judgement to devise approaches to accomplish work, resolve design and operational problems

  • makes decisions in situations where standard engineering methods or operating procedures may not be applicable

  • supervises or trains maintenance technicians and operations personnel

Minimum Education and Experience:

PhD in an applicable discipline of Engineering or Science and 20 years of increasing technical experience and responsibility

Additional Requirements:

In addition, this candidate shall have experience in

  • field portable x-ray digital radiography and computed tomography imaging systems

  • 2-D and 3-D x-ray imaging systems for materials characterization

  • improving system characterization and alignment in x-ray computed tomography

  • development of multi-modality nuclear assay systems for waste characterization, including active and passive gamma, digital radiography and computed tomography, active and passive neutron measurements, and measurement integration methods
