Sr. Engineer – Automotive R&D Laboratory Instrumentation
Located in Hagerstown, MD, Volvo Group Trucks Technology operates one of a series of global Powertrain Development Laboratories which focuses on research and development of heavy duty Mack and Volvo truck engines and transmissions. The focus of this laboratory is to optimize and calibrate performance of our product while meeting regulatory standards and the growing needs of our customers.
Technical Development is an elite force that maintains the laboratory while continually improving hardware, systems, and the integration of the methods utilized by those systems. Key areas include supervisory control and data acquisition systems which include, but are not limited to: engine dynamometers, test cell automation systems, fuel conditioning and measurement systems, as well as emissions and combustion analysis systems.
This key role is responsible for ensuring that all instrumentation & hardware used in the engine test laboratory is operated at the highest quality level and in continuous compliance with internal and external requirements. This includes ensuring that the maintenance and support of the equipment is properly executed and that the laboratory continues to develop these technologies at the leading edge of this industry.
Responsibilities / Main tasks
•Serve as the local expert on lab measurement equipment operation and maintenance.
•Coordinate test plans and evaluate data from internal local/global testing and external programs.
•Technical interface to the lab services technicians and engineers who establish test plans
•Analyze test cell data to evaluate the degree of error and the origins of error
•Provide clear technical documents to specify the equipment capability. Write work instructions for calibration of equipment
•Determine calibration processes and frequency, and provide support for calibration documentation.
•Initiate and implement cost savings through efficiency and reliability improvements.
•Strongly advocate the plan for keeping the most current and accurate measurement equipment. Evaluate new equipment and recommend purchases. Capital funding requests and planning are mandatory responsibilities
•Provide direction to Union instrumentation technicians, test technicians, and mechanics to complete hardware installation, maintenance and testing
•Evaluate regulatory requirements, test cell capabilities, test protocols, engine operation and systems controls to recommend and implement best practices and equipment to achieve required specifications
•Periodic domestic and international travel may be required
•Actively seek new ideas, improved equipment, and efficient operating solutions
•Build a strong network within the global network of Volvo’s laboratories, trade associations, and vendors.
•Global Working Group Participation: Serve as a Hagerstown representative in the global Volvo forum.
Essential Skills and Experience
•Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering or related field required; Master’s Degree preferred
•Minimum 3 years supervisory control and data acquisition
•Familiarity with federal and local regulatory documentation as well as ISO 9000 procedures and practices
•A basic understanding of programming languages and communication protocols is desired
•Data reduction and analysis skills
•Critical thinking skills
•Problem solving skills
•Basic Project Management skills
•Diesel Engine understanding, including after-treatment systems is a plus
IT Application Experience
•Some programming skills (Matlab, C#)
•Knowledge of computer communications (CAN, Serial, etc.)
